The opening scene of "The Poet X" begins in summer. Summer usually represents life, joy, and opportunity, as well as freedom and growth. The tone of the poem decently reflects that, and the feeling of an idyllic summer is evoked. It is expressed through Xiomara's watchings that the neighborhood all seems to know one another. Xiomara takes the role of the observer here, watching from her stoop the commotion of the neighborhood, from the old church ladies to the kids playing in the street to the drug dealers. This is an interesting connotation of Xiomara's character to me: she clearly knows the ins and outs of the neighborhood, and is content to watch, however she is characterized as "unhideable." Normally in the literature I have read, the "watcher" character is one that is overlooked, a trait that allows them to sit and watch. Xiomara, on the other hand, is tall, taller than her dad, and has a developed body. I think the function of describing Xiomara's looks and the different reactions her body gathers is to show her relationship with the world, as well as to depict how the girl has thick skin.The part of the opening scene where Xiomara explains that her name is the only one in her family that is not either biblical or Dominican is also important, because it could likely foreshadow a sort of outsider feeling in Xiomara, a feeling that she isn't who her family wants her to be. This feeling is expanded on when Xiomara begins to question her faith later in the scene. I think that the beginnings of biblical talk here might carry over the duration of the book, so I would consider this scene important to the novel so far.One thing in this scene that stood out to me is Xiomara's relationship with her family, because I am also a twin and was also born to older parents that weren't sure that they would ever have their own kids. I don't "resent my birth" like Xiomara does but I do feel like a burden sometimes. I liked the flow of this scene and the language choices used. ...more "
