I originally borrowed the audiobook but the narrator’s voice was truly unbearable to listen to from an audiobook standpoint. And it made me wonder if she was also new to narration because in addition to her voice having a damaged-sounding squeak to it, the WAY she read was also too unrefined IMO.

So I then took out the e-book and decided to visually read it thinking that would be an improvement, but I still DNF’ed it with zero regret and then came here to see if I was the only one who thought it was kind of a mess.

So yeah, this review is written only about the first half of the book, which I feel like should be enough to have read to have given this book a chance.

Nothing in this book (at least the 1st half) is handled with the level of nuance it needs. Everything feels like a cardboard cutout of a story element to the point that it began to leave a bad taste in my mouth. The scope of this book felt overly ambitious, but maybe it would not have been if the author stopped repeating himself over and over. I swear I read the same scenes easily 4 times; tension at the casino, school, or at the family home repeated over and over. And because nothing was handled with enough nuance it led to weird vibes sometimes. Like, there’s so much mention of $$ in the tribe by Anna that the whole tribe gets represented in this kind of avaricious way because it’s practically the only time we get any mention of the general climate or Anna’s thoughts about the tribe. I just wish the heavy $$ focus could have been handled with some more tact and nuance, it just felt weirdly heavy handed and left a bad taste in my mouth I can’t quite put my finger on. It would have been nice to get a more well rounded sense of things, not just casino with slacker employees (hired not bc they were qualified but simply because they knew important people), drug addiction, and her family’s personal chaos (and yes, a few mentions of the storyteller). I’m not saying that stuff isn’t realistic or anything, I don’t personally know, but I do feel like it was an overly pigeonholed representation.

And honestly I feel like I could say that about any of the issues the author attempted to cover in the book. The bullying similarly feels lacking in real nuance in the sense that Anna’s relative stoicism about it feels a bit like a cop out. Her stoicism in general felt like possibly a way to avoid writing the emotional inner world of a 17 year old girl, but obviously I have no way of knowing that. What I really mean is that even the main character, the protagonist, feels like a cardboard cutout to me (as do all the other characters).

I also agree with others that labeling this book as horror would be inaccurate. And that it is written like a YA. The characters are also extremely difficult to connect with, they’re also just cardboard cutouts. Anna isn’t really a believable 17 year old most of the time, either. The jumpy timeline was also a miss for me as well. It really took any possible emotional weight out of any of the scenes. I was going to force myself to keep reading but I just can’t—the dull repetitive nature of it is making me crazy.

I greatly appreciate that Nick Medina is trying to draw much needed attention to important real-life issues, but the execution was so rough I fear it may have hampered that attempt. His actual writing is pretty easy to read, which is how I managed to get as far as I did. It’s like a painter with good technical skill but who chooses compositions that are so visually unpleasant that it cancels itself out.

All that said, however, I would probably be open to checking out his future work to see if he’s able tighten things up and actually write the story without getting in his own way. I know this review probably sounds harsher than I mean for it to be, but my experience with the 1st half (and the audio book) was truly just that underwhelming.. ...more "
