I felt a surge of grief, I, who had never known men, as I stood in front of this man who had wanted to overcome fear and despair to enter eternity upright and furious.
What I enjoyed about this book is the way it changed my perspective from the beginning to the end. I found it really frustrating throughout the book because all I could focus on was the why. Why were they in the prison? Why did the alarm go off? Where were they? Who was responsible for all of this? And that is the same thought process that the child goes through the entire time and it rips her up and down as she navigates the world with the older women. By the end, and especially in this passage, I feel like the reasons why were not important in the slightest. It was about the human connection one has with another even with nothing between them but the air they breathe. The child knows nothing but what's directly in front of her, yet she still finds resilience and hope in the circumstances around her. She is frustrated by the why's but also by the women who she finds simple and slow. It is her anger and curiosity, her bareness that keeps her going until the last page. This book left me feeling quite empty, because everything was right there, and I am sure the answers I needed could be explained but she did not know what the objects or the words were, she could only focus on what she knew. The lack of knowledge and of people left her lonely and me, perplexed.
