Elijah of Buxton Book Review
During the 1800's, escaped African-American slaves started to begin settlements in Canada. Everyone started their family and the population began to grow. However, in the settlement of Buxton, Canada, the first freed African-American was born. His name was Elijah.
Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis is historical-fiction book that takes the perspective of an eleven year-old African-American boy, who can teach younger readers why they should listen to their parents and when they have gone too far with a joke.
Elijah always finds an adventure, or trouble. For instance, one of Elijah’s neighbors is trying to buy his family out of slavery, but his money gets stolen. Next thing Elijah knows, he is trying to track down the criminal, and return the money back to his neighbor. Another interesting personality of Elijah is that he normally doesn't think before he acts, he only thinks when he is doing something. He is also not the smartest guy around, and tries to act tougher than he actually is. For example, he has a fear of snakes and starts running down the middle of the street when he sees the snake's trails. His mom scolds him for acting like a three year old, so he asks mom why it's different when she gets scared when she sees a toad. As a joke, Elijah puts a toad in his mother's sewing box, and waits for her to find her little surprise. Again, Elijah is unaware of the consequences he could face when his dad finds out.
As Elijah starts running into a ditch across from his house, he sits there waiting for his mom to open up her sewing basket, "Finally Ma put the basket back in her lap and reached in. She knowed right off something was wrong 'cause with that toady-frog added to it, her sweater weighed 'bout five pounds more than the last time she touched it." (1.page 14 paragraph 1.) This is one of the numerous commotions that Elijah gets himself into. His dad came over to him when he was laughing up a fit, and told him what trouble he was going to be in once he got home.
If you like this book, you may also like Mr. Tucket by Gary Paulsen because the main character also doesn’t think before he acts. He wanted to try out his new gun, so he jumps off of a train, and starts aiming at buffalo dung. He wasn't able to get back on the train, and is now in Native American territory.
I would give this book 2.5 stars out 5 stars because the book hooks you, and you want to keep reading, only to find out that the book was toying with you. It grabs your attention for about one to two chapters, then moves on to another topic.
There were times when I could not put the book down, because of the humor and trouble Elijah would get into. Then there were times when I wanted to just start a new book because it kept toying with me, since there would be a new topic almost every two chapters. Other than that, I think that Elijah of Buxton was a good book, and is a good book for young readers. ...more "
