still fucking good. so fucking good. it will be confusing on the first read-thru bc the narrative is non-linear and there’s a big chunk of alex’s lore you don’t get to find out until, like, over halfway through the book (like 60% to 70% through?), so it’s a lot of confusion and trying to learn all this world stuff while also trying to solve a murder while also trying to figure out wtf happened with darlington and alex. it’s a lot!! but if you don’t read it all in one sitting like i did my first time, you will have a better grasp on everything LOL. i also wish that bardugo’s immersiveness with the world-building and way of descriptions and whatnot from the six of crows duo bled into this? i feel like maybe some of that was sacrificed or just lost with how this narrative and storyline are set up… just falls a bit flat compared to the soc duo, but it can be harder to try and re-vamp a real place after being so submerged in creating your own world and whatnot. all that being said, very much still in lurv with this book and this lil world and all the characters, can’t wait to re-read the second one next 🙂‍↕️🤭

oh man, this book… this is what has sealed leigh bardugo as one of my favorite authors. i was obsessed with her “six of crows” duology and was looking for new books to read and stumbled upon this one! i am soooo so glad i did.

not only are the characters just unbelievably well done, they also make you want to just keep them in your pocket forever. alex is possibly one of my more favorite main characters i’ve read in a book, especially in a fantasy. sometimes the main characters seem too perfect or too main character, but alex is nothing like that. she’s quite the opposite, and i think that’s why i like her so much. she almost feels like everything a main character shouldn’t be, but it’s extremely perfect that way.

and don’t even get me started on this plot. i stayed up until 3 a.m. so i could finish reading the whole book because i needed to find out everything that happened right in that moment, i couldn’t just sleep on it. this whole book had me intrigued from the start and with each answer you get, another myster unravels itself and you just have to keep falling down the rabbit hole—and you should let yourself do so.

the relationships you see these characters make, the strength and loyalty behind them and their own selves, is what really draws you in. yes, there’s magic at yale. yes, there’s secret magical societies that are controlling everything major in the country. but there are these amazing relations and stories told through all of these big things that are what keep you reading, along with the fantastic characterization that bardugo brings to every book she touches.

after finishing this book, i immediately ordered the next on amazon to have it asap because even as i'm typing this now, all i want to do is curl into a chair and re-read this book. i can't stop thinking about it, it's like having a new school crush! i'm refraining from putting any spoilers in here because i want everyone to have the same feelings and reveals that i did, but just know, i could write soooo much more if i didn't care about that.

all in all, if you're looking for something magical, dark academic, and very plot-driven, then this is the book for you. i highly recommend it to anyone who might be even slightly interested. ...more "

okay. this... masterpiece of a book.

i obviously read the summary blurb and the in-cover of the book, as most everyone does, but those genuinely could not prepare me for what the reality was of this book. everything about it has meaning, every character plays a role, the entire world and system that gets set up is so fantastic and wonderful. and the emotions and thoughts and ideas that get conveyed in this book from our main character, vis, are just... surreal. i'm not ashamed to say that i cried at least three times reading this book, and most definitely sobbed once. it is all beautifully written and has one of the most beautiful male main characters i've read about in a while.

there is a lot of ancient greco-roman influence with this book that slightly surprised me, i will say. most definitely not in a bad way, but i didn't realize it! lots of different ancient styled names and even the clothing influence and the festivities and the structure of the society. it all feels very old academia through the whole book, so if you are an enjoyer or enthusiast of ancient greek or roman mythology or society, i would also recommend this book because there is a lot of influence from both that make the story and world very reminiscent while also very unique.

i don't have much else to say about this book that isn't related to spoilers, which i don't feel like exposing at this moment in time because everyone should experience this book the same way i did because it is the best thing to just read this book with almost very minimal ideas of what's going on. i will say, though, that this book is definitely one that you have to get acclimated to while reading. you aren't necessarily thrown into the middle of the action or into chaos or anything, but you are certainly having to come to terms with this really well-developed and thought-out world from islington.

a lot of my favorite books on here are my favorites because of the world-building and -establishing is so expansive and in-depth and fleshed out to the most that it can be, and this book is most definitely no exception. it is over 600 pages of you being fully immersed in this world, though i will say i still have a bit of a loose confusion about it all because it is so large and grandly expansive, but the confusion isn't a bad thing. it is literally just how i felt for probably the first 10% to 25% of this book because with how in-depth and fully developed the world and everything in it were. there is just a lot to take in, and i mean that in a very high compliment way.

apart from the world itself, these characters are very good and very easy to love and become connected to. sometimes, i find myself loving side characters more than main characters (which still happened here because callidus and eidhin mean so much to me, i love them so much), but... god, i love vis. and not in a silly-goofy usual way of mine where i just kick and giggle my feet over them because i love them so much, though that is also true. this is in a way where he is simply like just someone i feel a fierce need to protect and hug and make him a cup of hot chocolate and make sure he has literally everything he ever needs. i simply love him so much and he deserves so much from the world that he doesn't get.

apart from that, the entire plot of this book is so astounding and usually, you can pinpoint the overarching plot of the book because, with a lot of fantasy books, it sort of gets laid out for you within the first few chapters of the book. with this book, you just have to be willing to never know where the plot and story is taking you because you can make all the guesses and assumptions you want, but the plot is genuinely the epitome of "never let them know your next move".

as i stated before, i wish i could rate more stars on here because this book deserves more than five stars. it deserves maybe all the stars ever in the galaxy because it is just genuinely such a goodddd book. so good. i will never stop speaking highly of it. ...more "
