How far will obsession and revenge take someone who is on the right side of the law? Anneke Van Helsing knows that her father did not kill himself. She saw who it was. A beautiful woman she could never forget. Instead of pursuing a life as a doctor, she decides to become an investigator, which leads her to the find of a lifetime: the woman. Now it's Anneke’s time to connect the woman to all of the strange murders that have happened in Amsterdam and beyond, taking her on a journey around Europe to find her killer.

The Fox and the Devil combined a few of my favorite genres: historical fiction, mystery, and paranormal romance. It's slow and studied, taking time to unfold the story, and also reflect on the past. Expectation, forbidden love, and tragedy all play a part in paving Anneke's path forward.

While Anneke was not my favorite character to follow, she had a habit of collecting loyalty from characters she didn't deserve. I loved Dávid’s optimism, Maher’s intelligence, and Inge’s tenacity. They are a superb team of detectives because they use their strengths and connections to their advantage. No lead was too small, no favor too large.

I would recommend paying attention to the dates at the beginning of each chapter. It took me a bit to figure out the significance of dates (and sometimes locations). It might give things away if I explain further, however piecing together the timeline kept me busy and was motivation to finish. I NEEDED to know how all of the pieces fit together.

The pacing felt slow until about halfway when the murders picked up and Anneke started taking more risks. I think her inner dialogue and tendency to dwell on her relationship with her father grew tedious, however it solidifies her actions and motivations. If you don't enjoy a character that ruminates, Anneke isn't for you.

Overall I enjoyed this book! White has a distinct voice, and from the three novels I’ve read (Hide, Lucy Undying, and The Fox and the Devil), I would recommend every one.
