When an idea is so old, and is so generally believed, it is probably true in some way, and, indeed, as is mostly the case, is not literally true, but is true psychologically.
An important thing to note is that what is being discussed is not naturalistic, or as stated, to be taken in the literal sense. It has relation to the unconscious mind; it abstraction meant to be interpreted.
