I'm surprised that many people have not heard of or have not praised *Rebecca* as a wonderful piece of gothic literature. It's almost impossible to want to put down even with its drawn out beginnings.
While the protagonist was frustratingly naive at times, she was also refreshing in her curiosity and perspectives on living in Manderley. Additionally the descriptions of the monotonous and almost constantly gloomy days really brought a sense of dread about the characters' lives compared to the bright and upbeat introduction. The gradual yet drastic shift in tone throughout the novel is noticeable and really allows the reader to follow closely and almost feel the anxiety that the protagonist does. My only critique with this pacing would be how the conclusion comes about. The entire ending of the novel feels rushed compared to the slow exposition, which really left the reader feeling how every day really dragged on for the new Mrs. de Winter.
The conclusion had many blatant admissions rather than discovery, and I felt at times the shifts in character were out of the blue, such as with Ms. Danvers and her decent into madness with her crying fits and outbursts against Mrs. de Winter. Overall however conclusion, did make sense and left more questions that kept me wondering after the novel was over rather than simply telling the reader what had conspired. I think I would definitely read this book again, and actually, do plan to recommend it to my book club for discussion....more
