I don't think I could possibly keep myself from comparing this book to Way of Kings (WoK), although I am not blind to my own bias. I find there are many things similar, and many things different, yet they are both undoubtedly Sanderson. Most identifiable to me, I find that TFE and WoK both have celebratory ends to their stories, which I can most easily describe as thrilling. Nearing the end of TFE, I found myself feeling similar emotions of hype and buildup that I felt when finishing WoK. I believe it's a matter of many different factors, but I think WoK simply earned this feeling more than TFE did. WoK was obviously much longer, and had more time to develop its mysteries and politics. I wished TFE was given the same treatment, although I never found myself thinking bad upon it. I just yearned for more in certain places.

I read WoK about a year ago and don't remember the details of the dialogue, but I'm instinctually inclined to say that Sanderson's experience as a writer here is evident. TFE was released in 2006, whereas WoK was released in 2010. The dialogue in TFE can be a bit stale at times, and I think Sanderson relies a bit too much on hearing the characters thoughts directly. I honestly can't say that it was anything past bad, but I don't think there was much engaging dialogue. I don't think I ever thought this during WoK.

One thing I did outright dislike was the evil-ification of the Inquisitors. I know, they're literally made to be warriors and they have spikes through their eyes. I get it. But I just can't take them seriously sometimes. Marsh's existence as one proves that they aren't all brought up in the same culture or with the same viewpoint (even if he was not an Inquisitor for very long). And, throughout the book, it's implied that they are, in fact, made, not born. It's weird to me that they all lust after violence so passionately, always with an evil grin. It's just too much. This is a really dumb nitpick but I had to mention it.

TFE was a great read and I'll definitely be continuing on to Well of Ascension. ...more "
