I truly enjoyed this book, and I found it so refreshing to read about two adults—two deeply broken people with completely different backgrounds and pasts, yet so incredibly alike—finding their soulmate.

Both characters felt authentic and wonderfully multi-dimensional, making it incredibly easy to empathise with them. Their emotions were raw and genuine, and I really appreciated the steady development of their relationship. Their connection felt earned rather than rushed, and I loved that the romance was built on emotional intimacy, vulnerability, and trust instead of instant attraction.

That said, I did find the pacing a little slow at the beginning. It took me until around Chapter 8 to really get invested, but after that, the story flowed much more smoothly. Similarly, the ending felt slightly drawn out, especially when it seemed like everything should have been wrapping up.

I also wasn’t the biggest fan of the push-and-pull toward the end of the book. Their fears and doubts started to feel repetitive, especially since many of those issues had already been addressed earlier in the story. By that point, I felt they had already grown together enough that a different source of conflict would have felt more impactful.

At the same time, I understand that this was very much the point. These are two deeply wounded people, and healing is neither easy nor linear. The book portrays that beautifully. Sometimes, even when we deserve happiness, we’re our own worst enemies. We sabotage ourselves to protect both ourselves and the people we love. I appreciated that the story never tried to “fix” either of them overnight, allowing their emotional baggage to remain a meaningful part of who they are.

One aspect that didn’t completely work for me was the writing style, particularly in Grady’s POV. His inner monologue relied heavily on metaphors and comparisons related to his job, and after a while, they started to feel repetitive. I found myself wishing for more varied descriptions that reflected different sides of his personality. I think that would have made his emotional journey even stronger, showing his transition from someone who buried himself in work to avoid his feelings into someone who finally allowed himself to believe he deserved a second chance — both in life and with Dee and her girls.

I also absolutely adored Dee’s daughters. They never felt like plot devices or convenient additions to the romance; they were their own little people, and they added so much warmth and heart to the story. Watching Grady slowly become part of their lives was one of my favourite aspects of the book.

I was genuinely fascinated by Grady’s profession. It was the first time I’d seen a job like his represented in a romance, and I found it incredibly interesting. It gave the story a unique backdrop that set it apart from many contemporary romances.

Finally, kudos to the author for not relying on spice. It was such a refreshing change, and it allowed the emotional connection between the characters to remain at the heart of the story. Sometimes less really is more, and in this case, it worked in the book’s favour. ...more "
