"I'm having a love/hate relationship with this book. Good story, good plot, and good, solid characters; the only thing that turns me off is Tolkien's habit of drifting off into unnecessary detail. At some points he'll even say that some nuggets of information don't pertain to the story. Perhaps it's just my personal preference to get from point A to point B without pitstops, but I digress.
