When this book started, I assumed we were getting more of Sabriel and The Touchstone. Wow, was I surprised when Nix jumped us fourteen years into the future, and switched to a brand new character! Any disappointment that I might have felt was quickly eclipsed by exploring a new part of the world from a very different perspective.

Then, after getting fully attached to Lirael, we switch perspective to Sameth. I was immediately disappointed to leave the Clayr behind, but quickly became fully engaged in his story.

I must say that Nix does a fantastic job of keeping both stories flowing, and picking great places to switch, always leaving us wanting more from where we are, but at the same time glad to be back to the other story.

All in all, just an excellent book, with great characters, and a much deeper dive into the magic systems and history of the world. Very glad that I started this series.

Two negatives that will probably keep this one from being a five start book.

1: While Nix does a great job at telling the story from the perspective of each character, he occasionally switches out to another character for a paragraph, or just to straight narration. This always felt jarring, and it definitely showed up when.. SPOILER... the two characters meet up. I probably cannot properly articulate what I mean, but it felt like an awkward narrative shift whenever it happened. Luckily it was not often, but I couldn't shake the weird feeling.

2. As much as I loved the world building, and the characters, as the book was winding down I started to worry that it wasn't going to finish anything, that it would feel like half of a book. Well, I was right. The book kind of just ends without anything substantial getting resolved, which makes it feel like pure setup for the next book. While I am a fan of continuity between books, I do want each book to feel somehat complete. this one did not, so my final opinion of this book can't really be known until I read another entire book. I am confident that the third book will deliver, so I am not worried. I just wish Nix hadn't taken that approach to these.
