Whi Pippa Fitz-Amobi is back again. This time is different, after what happened with Stanley Forbes and Max Hastings Pip is struggling with her mental health and insomnia. Yet, she hides this from her friends, her family and her boyfriend, Ravi Singh.
While Pip is still fighting in court with Max Hastings as he's trying to sue her because of a statement Pip had made on her famous podcast, she's stumbling upon weird chalk drawings on her driveway alone, dead animals in front of her house, and an anonymous account emailing her threats. Pips unnerved enough with everything she's been through, and now this doesn't seem a coincidence.
On her run, Pip comes home to find the words ‘dead girl walking’ scribbled in chalk. Showing Ravi this, he pushes her to go to the police about this potential stalker. The detective is no help as usual, and goes to say that this isn't enough proof to prove that she's being stalked. Ignoring the fact that she’s been through too much with her investigations and it won’t be good for her, Pip is determined to solve the case and figure out who her stalker is.
Pip decides to take this to the internet, she begins researching the weird things that have been happening to her and upon this searching she finds an article. The article is about a serial killer who left the same messages to the people he had killed, but a man named Billy Karra was sentenced for those murders. Though his mother has a Facebook page where she's convinced her son is innocent. Pip figures she needs to look further into this, her stalker and these deaths are too similar.
Maria Karra, the man's mother, gives Pip reason to believe her son isn't guilty. He worked at a company owned by Jason Bell. Maria truly believes her son was just in the wrong place at the wrong time, and Pip thinks that might be the case as well.
She keeps investigating, stopping by Jason Bell's house trying to find more information on Billy Karra. Weird things keep happening to her and she's getting more scared to even be in her town especially after a car almost runs her over and then speeding off.
Pip installs an app that can tell her unlisted numbers, and eventually she ends up in contact with Billy Karras' sister. His sister had also experienced chalk drawings and dead birds at her house, so the meeting was definitely a smart decision. Harriet, the sister, told Pip that Andie Bell had contacted her before the girl died and she gave Pip the email address that Andie had used. Pip ends up hacking into the account, and there she finds an unsent email addressed to Harriet about the killer and his real identity.
Pip is out on a run, when she gets kidnapped. Someone shoves her into their trunk and she ends up in the warehouse of Jason Bell's company. Jason Bell was her kidnapper, and he admits to being the serial killer as he wraps Pip's face in duct tape and ties her to a shelf. Her captor leaves and gets in his car, Pip figures this is her chance to escape. And escape she does, she breaks free of her binds and attempts to escape through the woods. But she hears him return, and in a frantic haze she picks up a hammer and beats him to death with it.
Pip had just murdered someone. Was it self defense? Not technically. Pip is scared, and decides she cant go to the police so she goes to Ravi. Together they hatch a plan to frame Max Hastings for the murder. They freeze the body, burn the warehouse and make sure they have alibis. No matter what, Ravi is on Pip's side.
Pip is terrified, she can’t let this go on and decides to confess to the police. But when trying to say goodbye to Ravi, he's not at home. She finds him later and he tells her that he told the detective that he had left the headphones at Jason Bell's home, Pip is in the clear.
Max is arrested for the murder, but he knows Pip set him up and he's very clear about that. Pip is sure that the detective knows Max isn't responsible for this murder, but with the evidence they have he decides to let it go. Billy Karras is released from prison after Pip reveals who the actual killer was, and she's going off to college. But, Pip breaks up with Ravi with fear of putting him in danger if he stays with her. Neither of them want to break up, but Pip is certain it's better for him this way.
A year later, Max Hastings is convicted of the murder and Pip receives a text from Ravi, saying “Hey Sarge, remember me?
This book was good, it really showed the aftermath of traumatic events and what happens when people really love each other, and the lengths they'll go to it. Though to be honest, it wasn't as good as the ones before it. It felt a bit rushed, It could have been split into two books almost. The ending hurt though, Ravi and Pip breaking up was the worst thing that could've happened but oh boy, it was effective. It made me want to throw the book against a wall. Overall, this book was a good read and I would recommend it. 3.9/5...more
