"The introduction of this version is especially interesting, dissecting the cultural and historical aspects of Prague and Bohemia in the late 1800s. The stories may be hard to appreciate or follow as fully without referring to Angela E's helpful information. Apparently there was lots of prejudice and division between the working class Czech people and the more elite, German classes; making up the areas of Prague then." Sep 15, 2025 02:35PM

Elizabeth Kostova
“In your country you don't care about history, and in my country we cannot recover from it.”
Elizabeth Kostova, The Shadow Land

Steven Rowley
“To focus, I think of how dogs are witnesses. How they are present for our most private moments, how they are there when we think of ourselves as alone. They witness our quarrels, our tears, our struggles, our fears, and all of our secret behaviors that we have to hide from our fellow humans. They witness without judgment.”
Steven Rowley, Lily and the Octopus

Maria Semple
“My heart started racing, not the bad kind of heart racing, like I'm going to die. But the good kind of heart racing, like, Hello, can I help you with something? If not, please step aside because I'm about to kick the shit out of life.”
Maria Semple, Where'd You Go, Bernadette

Gail Honeyman
“Tiny slivers of life--they all added up and helped you to feel that you too could be a fragment, a little piece of humanity who usefully filled a space, however minuscule.”
Gail Honeyman, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine

Gail Honeyman
“I’d tried to cope alone for far too long, and it hadn’t done me any good at all. Sometimes you simply needed someone kind to sit with you while you dealt with things.”
Gail Honeyman, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine
