"Maybe it’s just me, but I’m struggling to see the incisive wit and satire I remember this book having. The characters are not funny enough to be caricatures, they are just sort of boring. Especially Lizzy. The reader is told that she is uniquely intelligent and perceptive, but more perceptive comments are made by most other characters. Maybe it’s just me and my tiny vocabulary against the genius of the classics" — Feb 10, 2026 11:38PM

“Sometimes I think illness sits inside every woman, waiting for the right moment to bloom. I have known so many sick women all my life. Women with chronic pain, with ever-gestating diseases. Women with conditions. Men, sure, they have bone snaps, they have backaches, they have a surgery or two, yank out a tonsil, insert a shiny plastic hip. Women get consumed.”

“People worry about kids playing with guns, and teenagers watching violent videos; we are scared that some sort of culture of violence will take them over. Nobody worries about kids listening to thousands - literally thousands - of songs about broken hearts and rejection and pain and misery and loss.”

“Sentimental music has this great way of taking you back somewhere at the same time that it takes you forward, so you feel nostagic and hopeful all at the same time.”

“I lost the plot for a while then. And I lost the subplot, the script, the soundtrack, the intermission, my popcorn, the credits, and the exit sign.”
