"Maybe it’s just me, but I’m struggling to see the incisive wit and satire I remember this book having. The characters are not funny enough to be caricatures, they are just sort of boring. Especially Lizzy. The reader is told that she is uniquely intelligent and perceptive, but more perceptive comments are made by most other characters. Maybe it’s just me and my tiny vocabulary against the genius of the classics" Feb 10, 2026 11:38PM

“Work fast."
"Yeah." I point at the screen. "First I have to wait for my computer to wake up."
"Hurry."
"Okay, I'll wait faster."
"Sarcasm.”
Andy Weir, Project Hail Mary

“Oh thank God. I can’t imagine explaining “sleep” to someone who had never heard of it. Hey, I’m going to fall unconscious and hallucinate for a while. By the way, I spend a third of my time doing this. And if I can’t do it for a while, I go insane and eventually die. No need for concern.”
Andy Weir, Project Hail Mary

“I penetrated the outer cell membrane with a nanosyringe."
"You poked it with a stick?"
"No!" I said. "Well. Yes. But it was a scientific poke with a very scientific stick.”
Andy Weir, Project Hail Mary

“The philosopher Ian Hacking uses the term “looping effect” to describe the way that people get caught in self-fulfilling stories about illness. A new diagnosis can change “the space of possibilities for personhood,” he writes. “We make ourselves in our own scientific image of the kinds of people it is possible to be.”
Rachel Aviv, Strangers to Ourselves: Unsettled Minds and the Stories That Make Us

“Human beings have a remarkable ability to accept the abnormal and make it normal.”
