It follows a character by the name of Edmond Dantés, a French sailor who plans to marry his beloved Mercédès (a Catalan) yet is stopped in his tracks when three men rebel against him for selfish reasons (Danglars, Fernand Mondego and Gaspard Caderhousse). On the day of his Betrothal, Edmond Dantés is charged with Bonapartism and is interrogated by a taciturn magistrate, M. Gérard de Villefort, who sentences him to the foreboding Chateau D'If for expedient reasons. Edmond Dantés remains restrained within the Chateau D'If for nearly 14 years, meeting an Italian Priest along the way, who enlightens Dantés upon various subjects, reveals the three men behind his imprisonment and exposes him to an Island full of treasures— the Island of Monte Cristo.

With a lust for vengeance, Edmond Dantés escapes the Chateau D'If using the body bag of the Italian Priest once he dies from a seizure, and escapes to a ship, where he remains for three months as one of the crew.

After nearly 14 years of constant torment and lachrymose nights, Edmonds entire appearance has been distorted, allowing for him to remain anonymous amongst his enemies as he plans his vengeance. He first visits Gaspard Caderhousse, under the pseudonym of Abbe de Busoni and extracts the entire story of the three men's plan, awarding Caderhousse with a 50,000 gem once he left, perhaps to aid him in his poverty, or to hasten his doom. Residing within Rome, Dantés pays a group of thieves to capture the famous Vicomte Albert Morcerf (the son of the now married Mercédès and Fernand Mondego) and holds him for randsome. He "rescues" the young man, going under the name of The Count of Monte Cristo, and is invited by Vicomte Albert Morcerf to a breakfast to express his thanks. Monte Cristo thus visits the man within France, meeting his mother and father along the way.

Edmond Dantés goes on to climb the ladder of manipulation, playing on his enemies' sense of greed and self-assurance. Mentally, he destroys these three men, leaving them untouched in the physical aspect.

I absolutely adore The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas. I find it a book that one can relate with on a significant level and fuels the imagination to unfathomable heights. As a result of this book, my vocabulary has increased/improved and so has my storytelling.

I especially like this book as its ending left me with feelings of dissatisfaction, with an unfinished end. It leaves the reader to imagine beyond the book and only to hope further. The Count of Monte Cristo is an unforgettable book, which had aroused a turmoil of emotions in me as I read it. It has one of the most unique, yet non-fiction plots out there.

I recommend this book to anyone, AND EVERYONE, who is interested in fictional books, revenge, romance or action books. I put intense emphasis on revenge as it is one of the main themes of the book. ...more "
