“The Reality Check. The most direct challenge to an anxious thought is a reality check: “Let’s check that thought against what’s true.” Don’t impose your picture of reality on your children, because that just makes them defensive. Instead, invite them to take a closer look at reality themselves. I like to use two questions I learned from the self-help author Byron Katie: “Is it true? Can you be absolutely sure it’s true?” You may not agree with your child’s answer. That’s okay. Don’t argue.”
