A community is divided into 5 factions based on each one's personality: Dauntless, Candor, Amity, Erudite, and Abnegation. Beatrice was born into an Abnegation family, but she isn't like one of them. Now she's turning 16 and she needs to choose which faction she would live her whole life. Which one would she choose? Stay with her family like she's supposed to or abandon them?

She's waiting nervously for her turn to do the aptitude test that would choose which faction she fits into. No one knows other people's results and no one is allowed to ask. During the test, Beatrice has to face many challenges that are supposed to define her (the dangerous wild dog, the man on the bus, etc.). But her result turned out to be different. What is it? Which faction would she live in her entire life?

Tori who runs Beatrice's aptitude test is confused with the result. Now Beatrice is worried that she would be factionless. But it turned out to be that she's Divergent?! She now has three choices instead of one: Abnegation, Dauntless, and Erudite. Which one would she choose? Beatrice is allowed to return home early to think about the result and she encountered a factionless man on the street. He warned her to be careful of what she chooses. Would Beatrice choose to be with her family or not?

She's having dinner with her family that night. She had to lie about the test which made Caleb, her brother who also took the test that day, suspected her. By the end of the night, he told her something that surprised Beatrice: think of herself first. Caleb has always been a selfless guy who thinks of others more than himself. Of all people, why would Caleb say that? Wouldn't he choose to be in Abnegation and take care of the family instead of Beatrice?

It's the Choosing Ceremony. Every 16-year-old has to cut their hands and draw their blood to the bowl symbolizes the faction that they choose: Abnegation - gray stones, Emity - earth, Candor - glass, Erudite - water, and Dauntless - lit coals. Caleb chooses before Beatrice and he chooses to be in Erudite instead of Abnegation which surprises everyone. Now Beatrice feels that she's pressured because one person is supposed to stay back and take care of their family and now Caleb isn't the one. Would Beatrice change from what she wants to what she should choose?

Beatrice left the Ceremony with the mad-sad look from father and a smile from mother (which is weird). She had to jump from train to train to get to the Dauntless house. She got help from a used-to-be-Candor girl named Christina. Beatrice also saw a person failed to get on the train and is now a factionless. The second challenge is when Beatrice has to jump off the moving train. Another person gave up, some even died, and Beatrice returned her favor to Christina when she helped her jumped. She met her "enemy" in this faction as well: Peter who was a Candor called her a Stiff. The 3rd challenge was to jump off the roof to the big hole on the ground. Beatrice jumped first and met Four, an important Dauntless guy who celebrated her bravery. Beatrice is also called Tris now. Would she reveal all of her personality? Would she realize her potential? Would she fit into the faction or not?

The Dauntless finally reaches their home, which is underground (called the Pit). Everyone dresses in black. Tris has her first hamburger and she encounters another leader, Eric. He's young and apparently, he's a river against Four, the other leader. In Dauntless initiation, only top-ranked people get in so they have to compete very hard. People cried on the first night because they miss home. Will Tris express her strength well? Will she stay with the Dauntless or will she become factionless? ...more "
