That being said, this has gotta be one of my top favorite books this year. It’s also one of the most evil books I’ve ever read. Holy. Crap.

First off, so far, Deadly Dreams is hands down my favorite book in the Fortuna Sworn series. Easily one of the best and most heartbreaking written romances I’ve ever read. This book made me cry. I actually had so much anxiety towards the end of the book that my body had a very physical reaction as I read the last 100-ish pages. Wow.
I won’t delve into why, for obvious spoiler reasons. But if you know… you know.

It’s also a true testament to K J Sutton’s writing that she got me to be truly emotionally invested in multiple romantic connections, despite having had a clear favorite since book 1. It made the entirety of Deadly Dreams even more gut wrenching.

As for the general review: The characters feel alive and unique, each in their own way. I notice this quite often when reading other books; that a lot of the times, instead of being sucked into the characters and the story, it feels like I’m watching the author have a conversation with themselves because the characters all have the same voice, the same quirks, etc. Judge this series all you want, but something K J Sutton knows how to do, is write distinguishable characters. Her books make me forget that I’m reading. Yes, the story is entirely absurd, completely unhinged, the speed at which events are taking place is bonkers, but these characters truly feel alive. I actually find that I care about most, if not pretty much ALL of them, which is… rare for me.

It’s evident that K J Sutton poured a lot of love and effort into this series and honestly, I genuinely think Fortuna Sworn could have the potential to be a mainstream hit if she just had a good editor. The story just needs a tiny bit of polishing and tidying up, ironing out a detail here and there, making it easier for the reader to keep track of certain story elements, and this could easily be a 5⭐️ series. ...more "
