" I don’t know how I feel about this one. Honestly, its sneaking away with a four because its the Hunger Games, and I found the random Easter eggs amusing. However, I was disappointed in the execution of this story, especially once Haymitch is in the games. The pacing was not very great, and some of the deaths in the story felt very plot armor-ish, as well as him living. Snow killed all the other people he didn’t like “sutubly” so why couldn’t he kill Haymitch? He couldn’t kill Katniss because there was a Peeta/Katniss thing. Here, Haymitch was just a “rascal” or something. However, I wasnt getting the same loving impression from the people as with Katniss and Peeta.

This book just felt so much less emotional then the Hunger Games and Songbirds and Snakes. And with his family and Lenore (lovely name btw) dying, it just felt so random, especially considering, once again, that Katniss’s family and Gale didn’t suffer at all. So why is Haymitches? I feel there could have been a much better way to execute it.

I think the author may have boxed herself in a little, trying to write a story based on the precedents she pre-set rather then building a story including them. Which I admit, its a hard thing to do and I’m just disappointed it didn’t turn out as good as I was hoping. I really didn’t feel too attached to the charecters. And it was weird how it was told. In the other books, I’m pretty sure its first person present-tense, however this one slips into an almost past-tense.

And then in the epilogue he brings up this super random bit about Katniss and Peeta. I honestly wish she didn’t write that it was so random and I really didn’t care at all. I did like the bit bringing Lucy Gray, but when he was just locked in that apartment for days on end because..because why? Girl I have no idea, it again, just felt like the author was like “Oh, I should probably mention Lucy” and forcibly came up with some random way she showed up. It just didn’t feel natural.

And I didn’t really feel for Haymitch. Honestly, the people that made me the most sad were probably Mags, with the mention of Finnick, Beetee, and the revelation of his son, and Wyatts (dad I think) hanging himself because he couldn’t handle how horrible he had been betting against his son.

Oh also, I didn’t really feel for Lenore much either. Like Lucy, I could see why Snow cared about her, loved her, and why her whole story was just so much more tragic. But Lenore felt more like someone we talked about rather than someone we met.

Can we also talk about the extreme amount of lengthy and unnecessary songs? Especially Lenores. It was like 8 long verses. DIDNT need to be that long. I don’t’ even remember half the songs, because it feels like every other character all had their own very important song. I remember “Lenore, Nevermore” from this and that’s about it. Oh, they brought up the hanging tree and nothing you can take, which I like those. But like there were just so many random songs I just skipped over.

10 minutes of real thinking time alone and I have lowered this down to a three. honestly it just felt so messy. ...more "
