" 4.5

I really enjoyed this book, other than the few things that really annoyed me whilst reading. I did the tandem read and it was such a good experience, when this book got slow, Tower of Dawn picked up and vice versa. Manon, The Thirteen, and Elide 4.5

I really enjoyed this book, other than the few things that really annoyed me whilst reading. I did the tandem read and it was such a good experience, when this book got slow, Tower of Dawn picked up and vice versa. Manon, The Thirteen, and Elide are my absolute favorites and can genuinely do no wrong in my eyes I was overjoyed when the Thirteen came back, cliche as it was, I loved it. I hope Elide makes Lorcan GROVEL for her forgiveness, truly.

The plot was great and this book is probably as good as Queen of Shadows, however I never once feared for any of the main characters lives. I love the main characters and I don’t want any of them to be killed off but I feel like that almost takes away from some of the suspense of the book. Sometimes when I was reading I felt like even if the main group was in a situation where they’re ridiculously outnumbered, there’s still gonna be a last minute change which saves them all and turns the complete tide of the battle. SJM has made pretty much every main character the most ultra powerful superior hero that could exist; Aelin is just stupidly overpowered, Lorcan and Rowan are the most powerful warriors ever for some reason, Dorian basically has no limit on his magic, etc etc. I get it they’re the main characters, but could you make the plot armor just a little less in your face?

Also my problems with Aelin have grown exponentially since like the middle of this book. I love Aelin as a character, but I absolutely cannot stand that she never tells anyone her plans and just expects everyone to be cool with just not knowing and risking their lives just because she’s like “trust me”.
I also don’t like her attitude for most of this book, I get it she’s the rightful queen, but she has this attitude of like “Okay I’ve decided I am gonna be the Queen, everyone bow to me and listen to everything I say and if you even question it I will have my cousin who is blindly loyal to me and my man give you a death glare” like… the way she snaps at Dorian and Manon?? The way she’s literally upset that Dorian figured out the riddle before her?? I know it’s supposed to come off as just her being confident and clever and not caring about anything but to me it just reads like she’s entitled and spoiled.

I do think some of it was SJM just deciding she wants to take some of the characters in a different direction than she initially wrote them but I feel like she could’ve done a better job with fleshing Aelin out, at least for the readers. ...more "
