King: A Life
by
But in hallowing King we have hollowed him.
Dr. King’s assassination was the first significant national event I remember. I was 9 and I cried. Our teachers gave us a special lesson about him soon afterward. Since then I’ve heard a lot about him, good and bad. So I decided to find out for myself. I started by reading a book of his speeches. They sounded good. Then I saw this biography. It’s thorough and very well written. I coupd hardly put it down. Eig interviewed people who knew King and accessed FBI files and other sources not available to other biographers. King was a complicated and troubled man who accomplished a lot and could have accomplished more but not for his flaws. I highly recommend this long but very readable book.
