Violet has survived her first year at Basgiath much to everyone’s surprise. Now she’s left trying to figure out how she’s going to survive her second year, especially with the Vice Commandant out to make her life miserable. It’s not that simple, though. War is brewing, and Violet knows who the true enemies are. Will dragons even be enough to survive the war?

I don’t know how Yarros does it, but this book blew me away. I anticipated it being a mostly set up book for the rest of the series, but I couldn’t be more wrong. This was nonstop action, intrigue, and political machinations. This book felt like it took Fourth Wing and amped up the intensity. Yarros took an already impressive magic system and expanded upon it further as we’re introduced to different characters and regions of the world. If that’s not impressive enough, the continued interactions and growth between Violet and her friends is heartwarming. They’re all determined to see each other through to graduation. Violet and Xaden have such great chemistry. As long as all the characters can figure out their communication skills, they’ll be an unstoppable force. Also, Imogen has officially become one of my favorite characters which I never thought I’d say during Fourth Wing. I felt like Yarros balanced out some of the heightened tension with comedic moments from Andarna between not eating allies and sassing Tairn at every turn. This book is going to bring all the feels so make sure you’re ready to laugh, cry, and scream through the whole rollercoaster and mentally prepare for the ending. If you thought Fourth Wing ended on a cliffhanger, it’s got nothing on Iron Flame.

I also want to simply thank Rebecca for this series. It’s opened a whole new world of readers including people like my husband who isn’t a reader but couldn’t help but be sucked into this universe. Also, it’s helped me connect with other readers on bookstagram to the point we have a whole chat dedicated to this series.
