Why people criticize the book: They think it's supposed to be a full tutorial for healing when it's probably more the story of MC changing one single aspect of their shitty belief system and that epiphany feeling really good. Obviously that's not gonna fix a whole mental condition but it's a cute, motivating win along the way.

This book has done no wrong. I feel like a mom whose kid is in a good high school basketball team; I'm proud of her but I know she's not in the NFL and that's okay. I can't possibly put The Midnight Library in the same category as Max, Misha & the TET-Offensive or stuff like House of Leaves; it has nowhere near the depth, complexity and creative revolutionary spirit that I feel like differentiates books in quality. That's why 3 starts and not 5 according to my rating system. But it gave me the tingles, okay? It satisfied my craving for parallel universe setups and it executed that well.
People whine "it is not a good representation of depressionnnn!!! this book is evil!!!!" but like bro the author was depressed for years, are you flaming him for his depression differing from yours? Crazy thought: Depression is different for different people???? Healing looks different from different people????
I haven't read the book to the end but I understand what people mean by the book reading like a linear self-help book, "shoving down" an easy fix. It feels pretty linear. Girl has negative mindset, is depressed. Girl tries to change mindset, happy end.
It may be triggering for people when they've heard "just stop thinking this way and you won't be depressed!" all their life to see such linear progression as it probably happens in the book. You don't heal lifelong mental issues by just fixing one aspect of your belief system. But when I read the book, I feel instinctively that was not the aim of the book. It's just there to explore one certain rumination that many people (including me) have and drive that point really home so the lesson actually stays with the reader.

It has gone down the predictiable cycle of:
1. Guy writes a cute, decent, fun book
2. People like cute, decent, fun book
3. People recommend cute, decent, fun book
4. Marketing Department kicks in, book gets spammed all over social media
5. People expect book to change their life because why else should it be everywhere?
6. 50% of people's lives are not changed. People find out it was, in fact, just a cute, decent, fun book.
7. That 50% of people drag book through the mud all over social media.
8. People from stage 2 are sad.

People hate this book because it's "shallow" and "not-subtle", people love it because it is digestible and binge-readable. Different sides, same coin. End of the case. ...more "
