I am in the middle of taking the Literature of the Holocaust class my senior year. We have been watching different documentaries, reading different poems, short stories, and watching different movies, all about the Holocaust. I have been quite intrigued with everything we have been talking about and decided to read this book.

The book is all about a boy and his father in Auschwitz. Wiesel writes all about his journey of survival and getting through each day while witnessing all of the cruelty going on too, and around him. The book starts and he is living in his hometown in Transylvania. His teacher got deported and when he came back, he was trying to explain to the class that the train got taken through a forest filled with trees and systematically murdered them. Nobody believed him. Soon after that, all of the laws were taken place. The Jewish people of his town are forced into small ghettos within Sighet. Later, they are forced onto cattle cars, and a nightmare of journeys occur. After days and nights spent on that cattle car, they arrive at Birkenau, the entry to Auschwitz. Wiesel is put through hell until he is finally free on April 11, 1945, the day the camps are liberated.

I honestly enjoyed the book, considering what it was about. I do not have a lot of bad things to say about this story. I thought it was creative how he was writing about his own experience going through the concentration camps instead of writing about someone or something else. I thought it was well written and an easy read. The only words that were confusing to pronounce were the ones in German. With the book being a little over 100 pages, he did a good job fitting in everything that happened in just those small amount of pages. I think that everyone should read this book because it creates awareness. With people knowing about the past can keep the horrible parts of history from repeating. ...more "
