Some of them where pacifists, and only went to the war because the where embarrassed not to, showing the societies preassure on individuals. For others, war took away their innocense, as they had to adapt to cruel circumstances, and became hardened personas. But what was really interesting was also the incorporation of Mary Anne, a character who was affected completely differently to her loss of innocense since she escaped her old, mundane life, and discovered a new purpose.
Additionally, O'Brien in this novel conveys many different emotions in the novel, by not only showing the hardships of war. He expressed to the reader the power of friendship, memories and companionship which allowed soldiers to surpass the war itself. Because of this, I really enjoyed this book....more
