Book cover for Night Film
Joni (Jonez)
I have been checking my watch this entire time. This is just such a SLOOOOOGGGGG. My God I can't wait for this to wrap up. This book has all the elements of a book I would like, but it just wasn't written in a manner that makes it work. 1. Poorley written chracters, written as cliche's (sometimes racist) or caricatures. 2. Films that seem almost dark and frightening enough to believe they could be underground obesessions, but unfortunaltley they all sound blander than something Lynch or even Zombie would come up with. Aside from the son really loosing his fingers, I don't see anything "underground" about these films at all. 3. Everyone they meet just pours out their soul and every ounce of infromation they could making the story easier to move forward. 4. Pacing is slow, arduous and clunky. It only moves forward with a plot reveal after meeting one of the many characters created to tell you everything and point you in the right or wrong direction. 5. An unlikable narrator can be great, but it just doesn't work. You are supposed to want to follow this character through the story. Something about the character needs to be likable in order for that to happen. Something about the character or the storyline needs to compell you to move forward. Brett Easton Ellis writes horrid characters that have something about you that pulls you in enough to want you to move forward. Love them, or love to hate them, you are there. But Scott is just a terrible person. He is a cliche, a bad father, and a racist who is trying to uncover something to clear his name at first. You don't care about him enough to WANT him to clear his name, and by the time he start questioning things and get super involved in the case to want to move forward to really know what is going on.....for me...I was just lost. I didn't care. I spent so much time hating Scott and being hit with character information dumps that I could care less how this ends. I just have it at almost 3X speed at this point and my only goal is for this to be OVER.

“This comes of always being the practical one, she thought, a bit wearily. Nobody will comfort you, so you learn to do it yourself.”
T. Kingfisher, Swordheart

Nat Cassidy
“Adulthood was all about compromises, wasn’t it? You decide what you need, what you want, and shift your priorities around until you find the least bad combination. Each compromise was a link in a chain, and if that chain dragged you down to the bottom of the East River? Well … at least you had Netflix and Spotify to distract you while you sank.”
Nat Cassidy, Nestlings

Kristin Hannah
“Books are the mile markers of my life. Some people have family photos or home movies to record their past. I’ve got books. Characters. For as long as I can remember, books have been my safe place.”
Kristin Hannah, The Great Alone

Gail Honeyman
“How marvelous to be able to read someone’s skin, to explore the story of his life across his chest, his arms, the softness at the back of his neck. The barman had roses and a treble clef, a cross, a woman’s face . . . so much detail, so little unadorned flesh.”
Gail Honeyman, Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine

Trevor Noah
“Growing up in a home of abuse, you struggle with the notion that you can love a person you hate, or hate a person you love. It's a strange feeling. You want to live in a world where someone is good or bad, where you either love or hate them, but that's not how people are.”
Trevor Noah, Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood
