Instead, the real tension between them stems from their different worlds: one from a prestigious background, the other a blue-collar worker, BUT they both have obligations that keep them apart.

The gradual reveal of the characters’ personalities, backstories, and, for Alexis and Daniel, their feelings for each other, was perfectly done. I'm impressive with the writing—there’s no heavy exposition, just seamless storytelling that allows you to uncover layers bit by bit.

My favorite thing about Daniel was that he never gave me “the ick” (~~Okay, he did a little when they were breaking up and he begged.~~) But his character is consistently thoughtful, fun, and intentional. I loved the choice to skip over their first time having sex. It was sudden yet natural, and the lack of graphic detail felt right. Their emotions afterward conveyed everything, letting us understand why they felt so drawn back to each other without needing explicit scenes.

Their dynamic was refreshing. It wasn’t the usual trope of enemies-to-lovers or the cold-hearted guy who slowly reveals a soft side. Daniel’s interest in Alexis is straightforward; he likes her and makes it known. Alexis, meanwhile, is realistic and cautious, wanting some distance but acknowledging her feelings enough to validate their attraction for each other. I appreciated that Daniel didn’t have a dark, brooding backstory—he’s just a playful, proactive guy who likes her in a genuine, uncomplicated way.

Derrick and Lola’s relationship was a foreshadowing of Alexis’s situation, I enjoyed how their story mirrored hers. Despite his manipulative tendencies (especially with the house), Neil’s character is kind of redeeming (Alexis did warn that anyone would fall for him...) after he goes to couples therapy. I could see why her parents, and even Alexis herself, might consider giving him another chance.

The climax was intense, with the fight feeling raw and impactful. The hurtful words had to come out, and it was necessary hard truths that they needed to confront. The cosmic intervention, which could have been easily stupid, was saved by dialogue. If someone else had written the scene with the lightning strike that kept her from leaving, it could have felt contrived, but here it just worked. Brie’s reality check for Daniel was hilarious and spot-on (“I’ve seen everything but the dick pics”), and the resolution felt quick but satisfying, as the brief misunderstanding provided Daniel with insight into Alexis’s true priorities.

The author has a knack for comedy! Many of the funniest lines come from Brie, my favorite being, “An antibiotic-resistant strain of chlamydia.”

The book was filled with beautiful quotes that stayed with me long after:
