"Finished The Witch in the Wood - the ending strikes you cold, particularly after not just this book but the Sword in the Stone before it so entirely committed to that mellow, whimsical, somewhat academic and moralistic, entirely child-friendly approach. It'll be interesting to see how much the books change following Arthur coming of age and how much they remain similar." Jul 12, 2026 08:52AM

H.G. Wells
“By the toll of a billion deaths man has bought his birthright of the earth, and it is his against all comers; it would still be his were the Martians ten times as mighty as they are. For neither do men live nor die in vain.”
H.G. Wells, The War of the Worlds

Grant Morrison
“You're much stronger than you think you are. Trust me.”
Grant Morrison, All-Star Superman

T.H. White
“It is the tragedy, the Aristotlelian and comprehensive tragedy, of sin coming home to roost. That is why we have to take note of the parentage of Arthur's son Mordred, and to remember, when the times come, that the king had slept with his own sister. He did not know he was doing so, and perhaps it may have been due to her, but it seems, in tragedy, that innocence is not enough.”
T.H. White, The Witch in the Wood
