Animation, TV, social media, and books taught me so much about the world, connected me to cultures and people I’d never meet otherwise, and introduced me to hobbies, communities, and friendships. But according to this book, all of that is “bad.”

It’s written from the perspective of an adult who knows everything and assumes every kid has perfect, loving parents, safe neighborhoods, and outside playtime. Newsflash: not everyone does. Some kids hide online because home isn’t safe, school isn’t safe, and sometimes being outside isn’t safe. Taking away their phone doesn’t magically fix that — it just makes things worse.

The book also assumes everyone is either a boy or a girl and that sexual curiosity only exists because of “corrupting” online content. Porn? Sexual imagination? Humans have always had that — books, myths, art, and yes, imagination — existed long before the internet. And it’s not shameful; it can even help people explore sexuality and identity safely when no one at home is listening.

It acts like any offline activity is automatically good, which is nonsense. Even reading 24/7, or staying in bed to avoid life, isn’t automatically “healthy” — context matters. But the author never seems to ask why someone does what they do.

Honestly, the book should’ve been about relationships, respect, and communication — not “take away the phone and everything will be fine.” That’s lazy advice that doesn’t solve a single problem. If your kid struggles, cutting them off from their only safe space online makes everything worse.

In short: the book is a hype machine for anxious adults who want an easy villain — phones — instead of understanding the messy, real reasons kids act the way they do. It’s shallow, judgmental, and utterly disconnected from reality. If you want to actually help kids, listen to them, respect them, and stop pretending devices are the enemy. ...more "
