Just finished the Patreon early edition copy. Regarding spoilers, I will briefly talk about the gimmick of this floor, which is given in the book description by the author/publisher, but there will be no other spoilers or hints at spoilers.

I'm not sure if anything will be different from the final version, but this was great. The book is not technically out yet, so I'll be avoiding any discussion of the plot entirely, other than what's on the back cover and to say it was very good. I'll talk a bit more about my expectations and whether or not those were met and ensuring a new reader goes in with proper expectations. Of course, if you'd prefer to know nothing I respect that as well. The book was great.

Now I'll get into a bit of my previous experience with the book and my expectations. At the end of the last book This Inevitable Ruin, which I loved, I felt a bit exhausted. It's a great book, but it's so dense with combat and that exhaustion is constantly felt by the characters. It got so chaotic that I wasn't sure it could be topped or if I even wanted it to be topped. It almost felt like an end to the series with how insane it got, though of course it couldn't have actually been an ending.

So how did this book compare? Well I've already said I loved it. The book does still get chaotic, but the difference here is the number of things happening at once. For the most part, you have a single race or "heat" that the characters are focused on. Of course there are other things, talk show interviews, syndicate politics, and preparations and side plots, but in general the different heats are the focus. In a way it's nice to be back to the simplicity of a normal dungeon floor.

That said, this is NOT a filler book. Just because it's not as chaotic does not mean it's not as insane or more so than prior books. There are still huge, status quo altering events in this book. In particular, the "Parade of Horribles" is pretty fantastic and will scratch the itch for a lot of people who have been desperate for the Lore of the dungeon. There's all sorts of dungeon breaking explots throughout.

A few of my worries I had and whether or not they were accurate:

Was this just a filler book before we get to the ascendancy games? No.

Did it miss the balance between humor and seriousness? No, in my opinion it's one of the funnier books but also has some huge dramatic moments. It doesn't quite have as many emotional moments, but there's still a couple here and there.

Did the dungeon just level everything up so our OP characters are just normal again? No, they are still OP, but the challenge is the racing which doesn't depend as much in their stats as it does their creativity. It's a good choice for a late game dungeon level. Donut in particular is comically overpowered and it's very satisfying.

The other biggest thing this book does is it sets up the goal post for the ending. You have a pretty good idea by the end of where this is going, though the way the author delivers and subverts expectations is a huge reason why this series is as good as it is.

So yeah, the book is great. I'm very excited for the next book when it's released! And thank you Matt for putting the stories out on patreon early so we can get our DCC fix early :D ...more "
