who wouldn’t want to spend a year in a drug-induced “hibernation”? regardless of the obvious negatives that would come with something like that, it sounds like an opportunity to reset; to finally get the rest you are rarely blessed with throughout your busy life, to slow down and succumb to nothingness, to avoid the trials and tribulations of everyday existence. as a chronic insomniac and workaholic, this sounds like heaven to me.

this clever, bold concept is immediately intriguing and never fails to be completely arresting on each page. Moshfegh’s sardonic, hilarious, breathless prose is enveloping and consistently engaging; each sentence feels carefully crafted and thoughtfully arranged throughout. i rarely find books as funny as others claim they are, but there were many points i found laugh-out-loud hilarious; the balance of its dark subject matter and side-splitting comedy is executed in such a skillful manner that it appears entirely effortless.

this is genuinely one of those books where when you pick it up, it near-instantly becomes immensely difficult to put down, regardless of the apparently repetitive narrative structure (which i have seen others complain about, i found it to be one of the novel’s greatest strengths.) a masterpiece of modern fiction, portraying despair, grief, and suffering in an incredibly unique & ingenious way. My Year of Rest and Relaxation is profoundly beautiful and poignant in ways i would not have expected. it is a stark reminder of life’s ineffable beauty. a meditation on consciousness, art, humanity, relationships, coping with the world around us, and so much more. an essential read that has immediately become one of my favorite books ever written.

the last page is one of the best i have ever read, the final few sentences made me burst out in tears i have been unable to shed for days. do yourself a favor and read this book. it’s a relatively quick & easy read and you will not be disappointed. ...more "
