This book started really strong for me- an immediate 5 star read. I feel like I was falling in love with the girls alongside these teenage boys. We never found out how old any of these teenagers were, but their deep rooted obsession with the Lisbon girls made me even more intrigued to find out about them.

The reference to the sisters as the “Lisbon girls” was a really interesting choice, as we are understanding these girls as a collective, rather than their own individuality. It actually irked me at some points, because theres no way you could categorise Bonnie and Lux in the same place. But these sisters were part of one identity, and I think thats a very interesting concept.

The objectification of the sisters also annoyed me severely. I was feeling deeply frustrated by the way that these boys viewed the sisters. During the music scene near the end of the book, there was a line about shifting the conversation into a more “intimate” vibe. That got me really riled up. I’m not sure whether that’s because I knew how the book was going to end, or because of the blatant SOS signals that we were receiving through the music, but all i could think about is that fact that there boys are SOOOO obsessed with having sex with these girls that they’re utilising the ONLY WAY of communication that the sisters have with the outside world to show their affection. Like oh my gosh why????

And the end scene. Lux and that dude who I cannot for the LIFE of me care about enough to remember his name. The realisation that the narrator has about why she did that just drove daggers into my heart. I feel it for Lux so badly. The self sabotaging just made me feel so much more melancholy about this book.

I feel like I haven’t even acknowledged Cecilia in my mind yet, because the thought of a 13 year old child taking her life is just too painful for me. But these justifications that everyone and their mother was making THROUGHOUT the book just angered me. It really reflects on how a small town can seriously gossip about everything.

I feel like religious trauma and the forcefulness of it is really really apparent in this book too. As someone who is religious, I myself see the extremities that people go to when they mix what religion says, and what individuals BELIEVE religion says, and you can see how it was implemented in this book, and how harshly it affected the girls. And don’t get me started on Mrs Lisbon. She made me put down the book twice. Like she really really angered me. Mr Lisbon wasn’t any better. His silence just cut me man. He could’ve done anything, but he remained silent.

I really loved the themes this book covered. Was a very interesting read. I will definitely re read it one day!

EDIT: I watched the film and it’s an incredible adaptation! It felt like page to screen!! Obviously, it missed a few things, but if you’ve read the book and you want to compare what you pictured with a screen, I would definitely watch the film, because it did that for me! ...more "
