now let me ignore that bias and say this - i loved this book! it’s a perfect sequel in my opinion. it has all the elements of the first one, but is not a carbon copy. it has a whole new plot and cast of characters, and actually adds to the overall plot and world. i often find sequels, especially middle books in trilogies, are written as some sort of long filler, but i feel differently about this book. the journey taken feels important, the lessons feel handy, it feels like it actively contributes.

i appreciated not having to learn a village of names but actually be introduced to two characters and grow closer to them. also we got to see more shadow, my favourite little beast. i loved that we saw poe and got a little glimpse of the villagers from the last book!! it was so lovely. (i really like poe, i don’t know why)

the romance was 10/10 for me. not too much where it’s sickly, and not so little that if you blink twice you’ll miss it. they had such sweet moments that were theirs and theirs alone, and also just to see emily open herself up and allow herself public moments of affection, possibly because the situations are so dire that she doesn’t care, but still!

i also liked that she was her own hero in this story, and rather than being saved, she was doing the saving. i loved how much of the story relied on her figuring things out and her own wits. her confidence was inspiring and i absolutely love her strength and willpower. i see it echoed a lot in her niece, who i also grew to love too. even rose himself was enjoyable by the end!

i just think this book encapsulated what the first book was about and spun a different tale. yes they end up in a new place, yes they uncover a mystery, yes they end up in a silly bit of trouble but it never felt repetitive or boring. i felt encapsulated by this world, as if i was wandering into the borderlands myself!

and okay fine, let’s talk about wendell bla bla bla last name bla bla bla green eyes bla bla bla so pretty and he’s so cute and i love how teasing he is yet in an instant serious and silly and cute and smart and mischevious and childish and loving and strong and insightful yet stupid and just everything and and and did i say cute and he yeah and you see basically i have strong feelings for him and the thought of waiting a year for the third book is giving me strong suicidal urges but alas, i shall wait for him!

don’t get me wrong though, i love emily and she shines, excels even! as a main character. he does not outdo her in the slightest, and he would never wish that either. i absolutely adore her, and i am so excited to see how she navigates herself on their next adventure.

but i guess that’s it for me, emily and wendell, at least for a year! see you in september 2025 <3333 ...more "
