I was so excited to continue in this amazing world that Frank Herbert created. The characters, the world building, the politics, all made for an epic book I. Moving on to book II, you notice a very drastic difference immediately… it’s like, not even a 1/3 as long ?? But I was excited regardless, and it turned out.. okay.

I’m giving this a 3 star hugely in part due to the ending. For me personally, it felt like every little thing that’s mentioned in the book all leads and alludes to this final.. “feeling”.. I would call it. It’s kind of like the first third of book one with the betrayal of Dr. Yueh. It’s built up and built up until this one moment. And I kinda felt this with Scytale, the Ghola, Korba, Irulan, and everyone involved with the conspiracy against Paul and Chani. Those details mentioned, again, for me, made for an emotional ending and a big realization for Paul and his character arc. Paul, you will always be a GOAT and my Lisan-Al Gaib.

Paul’s transformation is something lowkey sad to see and kinda has that Anakin Skywalker feel. You almost start rooting against him and for the people conspiring against him because of everything you read that Paul has done as emperor. It really ties with the quote “you either die a hero or live long enough to see yourself become the villain”… that’s what I was thinking the entire time I read this book because it was so evident and so real. The symbolism was so cool with a certain physical thing that happened to him as well, and he just had so much power and foresight that him feeling like he HAD to do certain things just won’t end up well.

Something that also caught my eye was how water was treated in this book. It’s definitely present but also they kept a lot of their customs towards it like they did when they didn’t have any. Liked that.

I enjoyed seeing Alia’s character and what she is growing into (not so much the incest-y feelings towards her) and kinda get these psychotic vibes from her which.. I kinda like ngl.. a little like her mother. I’m interested to see her arc in the next book. Speaking of Jessica.. WHERE WAS SHE?? NOT MENTIONED EXCEPT FOR A SINGULAR PAGE. Half a star off just for that. Although… I did like the “ghola”. I heard other people thought that was confusing ? I lowkey loved it and am exciting to see that character back. Also thought the Bene Tleilaxu and Scytale was sick, any time he was in a scene he captivated it.

So, lacked action, lacked big story arc, gained a dwarf (reminded me of the Fool from Farseer omg), but definitely was just a set up little sneak peak towards the 3rd book which, got me interested and I kinda liked.

This book I heard was supposed to be either combined with the 3rd book as one entirely, or to be followed IMMEDIATELY by the 3rd book, and.. I see it. It lacks a bit because there’s not a lot of action like the 2nd and 3rd parts of the first book bring. It just feels like a glimpse into these people’s lives for like.. a week, and then we’re out. So it just falls short from containing much of a story, an arc, action, and events that really feel you tied to what’s going on with the characters.

Nevertheless, love Dune.
