I’ve read a few of Colson Whitehead’s books already, and one thing jumps out every time: he is a master of cadence. Within a sentence, a paragraph, and among paragraphs. He seems to effortlessly (and that’s the mastery, because it’s not effortless at all, he just makes it seem so) vary the length, meter, and forcefulness of each sentence. It is almost like reading poetry, but with the gripping narrative of the most compelling prose. He’s a delight to read, every time.
