Honestly… wow. This book was such an experience. It’s been a really long time since I’ve found myself so completely pulled into a story like this, to the point where I just didn’t want to put it down. You know that feeling when you’re so immersed that everything else kind of fades away? That was me here. The plot was incredible — steady enough to keep me grounded but quick enough that I was always turning pages, never bored for even a second. And the writing was so easy to fall into, like the story just flowed.

The world building and the magic system were honestly some of my favorite parts. They were unique and thorough without ever feeling confusing or overwhelming. Everything made sense, everything fit together, and I never had that moment of “wait, what’s going on?” It felt like a world I could actually step into, which is rare for me.

Now, this may or may not be an unpopular opinion, but I love Diem. Like… really love her. She’s just that girl. Sassy, independent, sharp-witted, and unapologetically herself. I adore her morality — the way she’s practical enough to know when hard things have to be done, but still draws a hard line when it comes to hurting innocents. There’s so much integrity in her character, but also so much fire. And the way she loves? Fierce, protective, all-in. Also, let’s be real, I will always love a heroine who will casually pull a knife like it’s second nature. That’s an instant yes for me.

Henri… ugh. I can’t even explain it fully, but I just do not like him. Something about him constantly trying to push and pressure Diem into things rubbed me the wrong way from the start. It’s not even one specific action, it’s just a vibe — and it’s not a good one. And don’t even get me started on my theories about Diem’s mother and “father”… I’m sitting on them for now, but trust me, the wheels are turning. On the flip side, I absolutely adored Teller and Lily, and I’m crossing all my fingers that they get more space to explore a relationship. There’s so much potential there and I need it.

And then there’s Luther. Deep breath. This man. This man is everything. Broody? Grumpy? Mysterious? Check, check, and check. Do I care that we still don’t know nearly enough about him? Not at all. In fact, it just makes me more obsessed. He has that energy that makes you lean in closer, wanting to know everything, and I ate it up. Also, one of my all-time favorite microtropes is the whole “I’ll take care of you when you’re hurt or sick” thing, and oh my god, it delivered so perfectly here. That kind of soft intimacy layered under all the grumpiness? Inject it straight into my veins.

And the ending… I was not prepared. Call me naive, but I genuinely didn’t see it coming. I just sat there staring at the page like “wait, what??” Totally shocked, totally hooked. And now I absolutely cannot wait to see where the story goes next — and yes, obviously, to get more of Luther. 🙂 ...more "
