For everyone else settle in for some thorough head-scratching and wondering why you fritter your life away like this.
I saw this book at first in a bookshop (as opposed to nestled on a mossy log in the middle of a serene forest clearing) and was drawn in by the back cover claiming to be attached to a book of comedic medieval japes and jaunts. As a fan of writers such as Terry Pratchett I found this prospect to be highly appealing. So I decided then and there that I should contemplate my purchase for many months before finally succumbing to purchasing at some time in the distant future. This plan worked perfectly.
Having now not only purchased, but read this book I can say many things.
Firstly, the book didn't live up to its lofty promise of 500 pages of debaucherous comedy gold. However, I am infinitely grateful that it didn't.
Had this been a solid laugh a minute book I would surely see this as little more than a good way to spend a few hours and necessitate investment in some surgery to correct my effectively split sides.
No, no. This is a book of depth and intrigue. A book of scintillating main characters and an absorbing ensemble cast. A book that will keep you guessing, keep you reading and also keep you wanting more.
Characters are diverse enough for all to relate to. For if I, a straight white male aged 25-50 can find something to relate to in a medieval fantasy fiction, then who couldn't (yes, even I see what I did there)?
The pace of the story is fantastic and, like a good perpetual.movement device, it has no lull period.
This is a book that I have picked up and mercilessly recommended to anyone who would listen (including 3 Jehovah's Witnesses and a cat).
Clay Cooper, of whom the story revolves around, is both likeable and flawed as are his multiple band-mates.
I have a tendency to ramble so I'll avoid it like a plague infested monkey offering a "once in a lifetime opportunity" and keep this brief.
Buy the book and read it. I did and I still live so... there's that.
I also have the second instalment on the shelf ready to roll and fervently hope that more people read the book than read my review. Tjough, assuming that I don't go back and spell check this (I wont) it shouldn't be too hard to better zero. ...more "
