I went in fully prepared for unhinged Nikolai to be running riot while Bran played the calm, level-headed foil (as has been the case throughout the series). But nope. Plot twist. That dynamic? Flipped on its bloody head.

Instead, we get buttoned-up, rule-following Brandon (who turns out to be the man of many internal spirals) and wild card Nikolai being the one gently holding the line. And you know what? It worked. Seeing inside Brandon’s head was such a surprise compared to how he’s been portrayed previously, and slowly watching him unravel across the series, only to finally get the full picture here added so much emotional weight. My cold little heart? Melted.

And of course Nikolai has named his dick and has full conversations with it. Of course he does. He’s dramatic, horny, and somehow loveable as all hell. But what hit me hardest was his tenderness. He’s chaos incarnate, yes but when it comes to Bran? He’s patient. Kind. Devastatingly soft. You can just see how desperately Nikolai wants to shout it from the rooftops but even when it’s hurting him, he gives Bran space and grace to navigate coming out. I WAS NOT READY.

And then …. Ohhhh then that final 10%? What in the emotional sucker punch was that? I was absolutely not OK. I knew there’d be a HEA (I’m not new here) but for a hot minute? I was panicking. I was heartbroken, furious, terrified… and then sobbing with relief.

This book? It’s messy, vulnerable, unexpectedly tender, and just the right amount of unhinged. 10/10 would be emotionally devastated by it again.
