Okay... Cheese and crackers... That was... MAN. 😭
I just finished reading this book... And for the first... 100-ish? Pages? I found myself having a hard time wanting to read it. But I finally sat down and ate up a big chunk of it a few days ago, and Okay... Cheese and crackers... That was... MAN. 😭
I just finished reading this book... And for the first... 100-ish? Pages? I found myself having a hard time wanting to read it. But I finally sat down and ate up a big chunk of it a few days ago, and I was absolutely hooked again. Gillian Bronte Adams just has such skill with writing, and I was near tears at many of the parts. I nearly sobbed with both relief and despair at the end.
Ceridwen is AT LAST re-united with Finniah and the others! Which was just- AH! I am SOOO glad. 😭😭😭 (But Finnian seems so nervous and unsure now... I WANNA GIVE HIM A BIG HUG THEN TELL HIM TO JUST GO KISS CERIDWEN ALREADY. 🫠) But RAFI!! AH- NOOOoOoOoOo! 🫠😭💔 The cliffhanger was CRUEL. I have no clue how on earth I am expected to wait for the next book now after THAT.
Something I absolutely must talk about, though, is the way the characters in this story have my entire heart now. It is extremely rare that I come across a female character that I actually like. And it is completely unheard of that the character is a like-able strong female. But Ceridwen is undoubtedly my favorite female character ever. Her entire arc, personality, and determination to get back up is beautiful. The arc she went through in this book was heart-wrenching, and yet, it does not feel forced like many character's arcs do. I find that nearly all books I read with female main characters have their personalities quickly become inconsistent, or even worse, downright annoying. Ceridwen's thoughts, personality, and shortcomings are realistic, fitting to her character, and make the reader connect with her surprisingly easily. (I just really love her, okay? 🥹💛) And of course, when talking about characters in this book, we CANNOT leave out Rafi. Rafi is my favorite. Rafi is the anxious, "humor is my coping mechanism", accidentally became a leader, character. The last few chapters, when he stood his ground... It gave me chills. The writing was beautiful, and seeing him saying "no" to running when we know he's done that all his life... I- I'm not okay after that. WOW. 😭😭 I love this child SO MUCH. 🫠 He's managed to scale the favorite character list faster than I could have ever imagined. I don't quite have words.
And of course, Jakim's point of view was far more interesting to me this time. To see that he bonded with a Dawnling, and to find his faith in Aodh growing... It was wonderful to read about, and I am so excited to see where this all goes.
And lastly, I cannot leave out how gorgouesly Gillian Bronte Adams writes. Her writing style sweeps me in, gives me the most colorful and vivid image of everything that has happened, and the worldbuilding has me blown away. It is closest I have read that sits near Tolkien's level of world-building. This is an entire universe, a place all it's own, with hundreds of unique and colorful cultures, at least four entirely different countries, and all of it intricately detailed and well thought-out. I will, and can, rant about this for ages. Gillian Bronte Adams knows how to write this war to be believable. This is a gritty war, a painful oppression, and a weak revolution. It is not sugar-coated. At least... Eight? Nine? Character have died so far. Nearly all of them being fairly lovable side characters. (NO ONE IS SAFE. I FEAR FOR MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS NOW-) This book series has won a special place in my heart so far. It's so rich, so full, and incredibly refreshing compared to the cheesy, half-baked books you can often find these days.
Phew! And there's my review. I cannot give this book anything less than five stars. And I will be EAGERLY awaiting the third book. (I NEED IT AS SOON AS IT COMES OUT. POSSIBLY SOONER- 😭😭)...more
