The Risk follows Brenna who is the feisty I thought The Score was my favorite Off-Campus/Briar U book, but The Risk takes it. Elle Kennedy's introduction to Jake Connelly was fantastic. He oozes charm and masculinity for a MMC and I ate that shit up!

The Risk follows Brenna who is the feisty daughter to Briar University's hockey coach, Coach Jensen. Brenna had to grow up quickly due to some circumstances in her high school years. Not only did she lose her mother at a young age, she also has a rough relationship with her father. Brenna meets Jake Connelly at a Harvard party (this happens in The Chase) and you can tell from their first meeting that they have chemistry, even though she ends up talking to Josh (Jake's teammate). Brenna is also working on trying to get into the sports industry as a female. I love that Elle Kennedy writes about the taboos of women in the sports industry (GO WOMEN!!!).

Jake Connelly is Harvard University's star hockey player and team captain. He is confident with hockey + women and does not play around when it comes to hockey and getting where he needs to be. Some label him as selfish, but who cares? He knows what he wants! Jake notices distractions for his teammates after winning their playoff game and decides to ban them from whatever it is that is distracting them—One being Brenna, Josh McCarthy's distraction. Once Brenna finds out about this, she declares war on Jake.

Jake and Brenna end up meeting by chance at a metal concert and Jake pretends to be her boyfriend to save her from a weirdo. Not only does Brenna hate this, but she ends up having to use Jake being her boyfriend as an excuse to try to get an internship with a sexist broadcasting company because their boss is a huge Oilers fan—Jake got drafted to the Oilers... What a coincidence. So for every time Brenna asks Jake to be her fake boyfriend, he wants a chance to show her that he can be a real one. Nothing is better than when a man says that he "aches" for you. Jake Connelly, a king.

Jake and Brenna's chemistry is undeniable. I thought Dean and Allie's chemistry was off the charts, but Jake and Brenna blow it out of the park. The tension, banter, and everything in between was perfect in this book.

Brenna and her dad have issues in this book and the chapter they finally had a long awaited discussion about, I was ugly crying in my office. Believe it or not, half of my highlights came from Coach Jensen, not Jake. For someone who is a daddy's girl, this chapter wrecked me.

The Risk gives off such a great enemies to lovers/forbidden love/Romeo+Juliet (without the deaths) vibe and I was loving it. And add fake dating and groveling too? All favorite tropes for me. I am obsessed with this book. It's definitely one of my favorite reads of the year. I am forever a Jake Connelly girly! ...more "
