I liked this book. Didn't love it, didn't hate it. If either Benedict was a better person in this or if Sophie had actually held him accountable for his actions before they married I think it would be one of if not my absolute favourite in the series.

Benedict is an asshole, plain and simple. He constantly tries to get Sophie to become his mistress, he blackmails her into working at Bridgerton House with information that is completely falsified, and when he finds out she is the woman in silver he becomes downright aggressive. It's a real let down for someone who's favourite character in the show is Benedict. And a let down for women as a whole- Sophie should not have fallen for him so whole-heartedly after what he did.

Apart from that, Sophie is a good character. Her development and personality is well built and thought-out, although I don't love her as much as I loved Kate in TVWLM. I love the Cinderella story aspects of the plot and I also really liked how the subject of marrying someone outside of your social circle in regency England is delved into.

The Bridgerton family dynamics in this series just keep getting better book by book. Violet Bridgerton you are an angel and we do not deserve you. I loved seeing the dynamic between Sophie and the Bridgerton women, as well as the dynamic between Eloise, Francesca and Hyacinth as sisters. Sophie's softer moments with Violet and the girls are some of my favourite in the book- say what you will about that considering this is meant to be a romance novel...

I don't know how to feel about the pacing in this book. It can feel slow at times, but it has it moments that keep bringing you back. I'm noticing with these books that there's always something seemingly catastrophic that happens out-of-the-blue at the end, but only serves to bring our core couple closer together (see Daphne falling off the horse, Kate's carriage accident), and with this book it's Araminta having Sophie arrested. This bit feels a little rushed, but I will admit the prison scene is one of the most satisfying parts of the book.

Overall, I would read this book again, but not in a heartbeat. It's probably my favourite story in the Bridgerton series so far, but it's majorly let down by one Benedict Bridgerton. The steamy scenes are brilliant, and I do like it when Benedict gets a bit softer at the end, but it's being majorly held back. I can't wait to see what they do with it for the show (Season 4 will be Benedict's series, fight me), now they've definitely overturned Benedict's character for the better. ...more "
