Augustus Everett my beloved!!!

As my third Emily Henry book, I was most nervous going into this one since I typically saw it ranked highest amongst other readers ranking her novels. I am here to say that it did not disappoint and instead exceeded expectations. Beach Read follows writers January Andrews and Augustus Everett as they pose a deal to write the opposite genre, leading to more time together and a promise to not fall in love.

Henry’s narrative in Beach Read felt a lot deeper and insightful compared to the other novels I have read from her and it was done with so much care to the characters. The progression of their arcs feels realistic while also taking both her female and male main character through high and low emotional moments that hold weight for the entirety of the novel.

Although it is romance novel, January Andrew’s personal journey spans beyond that, illustrating how one can approach a romantic leaning story while still giving characters tons of depth outside of their romantic plot. There’s a certain chapter towards the end that I cried through, something not uncommon when reading an Emily Henry book. Her ability to weave comedy, romance, and emotion is at it’s best in Beach Read, with January’s complicated feelings for her father, Gus’ past, and their intertwined life, readers get a little bit of everything.

An aspect I thoroughly enjoyed was Henry’s skill of writing physicality in her characters. Specifically with Gus, the way she describes his mannerisms and movements is utterly perfect. Easy to envision, easy to fall in love with, and easy to want more. These are characters you will miss once the novel is over, but feel satisfied with where they end.

This is by far her most well written novel I have read so far, which I think as a writer myself, reading writer characters was a big factor in this. At times, January and Gus’ conversations with one another reflect that of how writers may realistically think or see situations. Yes, this should be a given, but Henry is able to recreate this in her characters with ease to a point that doesn’t sound cheesy or preachy, but insightful discussions between the characters. If you’re a writer, you’ll love this, it is the epitome of a writer's book. ...more "
