Rachel Gillig, I am kindly asking for the sequel to this book to be announced. Very kindly asking. The way the ending of this novel will haunt me until I have the next book in my hands…

I did not doubt that I would love The Knight and the Moth because I loved Rachel Gillig’s previous books, but she completely knocked it out of the park. With a similar gothic tone, Gillig creates a whole new, wondrous, and terrifying fantasy world with a unique magic system and well-rounded characters that will have you laughing and crying.

This is a novel of reawakening. Of discovering the reason why you live and do is subsequently wrong, that everything you have thought to be true is false, and yet there are still reasons to push on. Sybil Delling is such a strong heroine, who is soft at times, but also brutal. She holds so much love and care, but her strength prevails and continues to grow. I could only imagine where it will go in the next book. Her crisis of her faith was written with so much care and intensity, you feel the fissures cracking in her in the way the stone cracks in the story. Gillig has such a fantastic way of weaving together words, creating symbols that reflect on the characters and the story at large, and I fell so in love with it. Rory was perfect, his relationship with Sybil progressed at the perfect rate, and those armor scenes…yeah. Gillig handled his unwavering loyalty and the amount of care he has for those he loves with his slightly broodish and hostile manner so well. Sometimes it can feel too jarring to have those two sides together, but here it was seamless and believable. There’s a specific moment between Maude and Sybil that made me cry too. All of her connections to the other characters are such a strong point in her journey, but at the cusp of it all is her journey of the self.

There was such a profound theming of found family, which makes what happens towards the end all the more heartbreaking. Even though you can kind of see it coming, it works very well that way. I’ve seen people say it was too obvious, but honestly, I don’t think this would have worked if it came out of nowhere, or did not have inklings to pick up on where it was heading, due to the main character it involves. It works because of how the character is presented, so I saw no issue with it. Plus, there is so much going on, there is a moment you forget about those odd feelings of foreshadowing that Gillig set up, so when it hits, it really does hit.

The gargoyle was wonderful, everyone talks of him, and it is for good reason. He is the main reason you will be laughing and then crying. Even looking back through all that I tabbed, I felt so emotional over this novel. I want to say more and more, but I just loved this so much, and I am so excited (and terrified) to see where the second book takes us.
