‘Shouldn’t we aim to avoid pain?’ Will asked. ‘Or at least mitigate it?’
Nico shook his head. ‘You know it’s not that simple.’
‘Pain helps us learn,’ said Gorgyra. ‘It is unfortunate, but we rarely forget the lessons taught to us in moments of pain.’
‘Pain is inescapable …’ Will sounded like he was talking mostly to himself. ‘I guess that’s hard for me to wrap my mind around because I’m a healer. I’m always trying to reduce pain.”

But that didn’t mean that he couldn’t choose the alternative.
Will knew that for a fact because Nico burned brightly as he fought Nyx, as he dodged her tendrils of smoke and hacked at her body. There was a ferocity in him, a power and a fury that could scorch the galaxy when he battled for those he cared for.
And he was now using it to fight for himself.
Even in the darkest parts of life, there was still … light.”

‘All right, all right,’ said Will. ‘Go get some rest. Now.’
‘Yes, Field Medic Will Solace,’ said Nico.”

Will groaned. ‘We’re not starting that now.’
‘My little Care Bear.’
‘Please stop.’

‘I’m not your child.’ Nico seethed. ‘My mother is Maria di Angelo, and she loved me and my sister.’
‘And where are they now?’
It was like she had slapped him across the face.
Don’t give in to her, he thought, and he felt Will squeeze his hand again. It’s what she wants.
Still, Nico couldn’t stop the tear that rolled down his cheek. ‘They’re dead,’ he said. ‘They have been for a while.’
‘And it burns you up inside, doesn’t it?”

‘I’m not your child.’ Nico seethed. ‘My mother is Maria di Angelo, and she loved me and my sister.’
‘And where are they now?’

“Though the Underworld is my realm, I am often restricted in my movements,’ said Hades. He sat to Nico’s left and put his hat aside, then gazed at him with his dark eyes. ‘I believed there was no demigod better suited to rescuing Bob from Nyx’s clutches than you.’
Nico barked a laugh – he couldn’t help himself.
‘I fail to see what is so amusing,’ said Hades.
Nico grinned. ‘I just remember a time when you were annoyed that I wasn’t as good as Bianca at being a demigod.’
Hades frowned. ‘I never said that.’
‘Totally did,’ said Nico.
‘That doesn’t sound like me.’
Bianca hid a laugh in a cough, and Maria scowled at Hades.”
