“There are the chastening examples of John Stuart Mill and Karl Marx (both of whom I have discussed in Orientalism), two thinkers known doctrinally to be opponents of injustice and oppression. Yet both of them seemed to have believed that such ideas as liberty, representative government and individual happiness must not be applied in the orient for reasons that today we would call racist.”
― Edward W. Said, The Question of Palestine

“What draws me to Palestine, then, is neither nationalism not patriotism, but my sense of justice, my refusal to remain silent in the face of injustice, my unwillingness to just go on living my life -- and enjoying the privileges of a tenured university professor – while trying to block out and ignore what Wordsworth once called the still, sad music of humanity.”
― Saree Makdisi, Palestine Inside Out: An Everyday Occupation

“The priests in church said it would be as difficult for the rich to go to heaven as it was for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle. I imagined the rich were busy making a gigantic needle with a huge, camel-sized eye. If you think about it, that needle has been forged. It exists. And a ceaseless cavalcade of camels passes through it.”
― Arundhati Roy, Mother Mary Comes to Me
