"The Sunflower by Simon Wiesenthal was an excellent read. It gives Simon and other Jewish prisoners perspectives about the harsh times of the Holocaust. I would not have known about all that they had been through. "The end was awesome. The fact that Eilis ended up telling her mother about her marriage was needed. Going back to see her husband Tony, was the right choice in my opinion. Leaving and cutting off Jim was the best choice too. Tony is best for her. The main charact The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid is a novel that highlights identity, standpoint, relationships, and culture. I picked up this book because it was assigned to my ninth-grade English class and I found it quite interesting. The main character Changez makes this book enjoyable and gives me a learning experience hearing about a man from Pakistan. I had no prior knowledge about the country of Pakistan and the culture that they pursue. In the book, Changez is with a character known as the American but doesn’t give background on why he’s there. Changez discusses his time and experiences from living in the United States. It lays out the challenges and roadblocks of a Pakistani man trying to fit into an American society.
To truly understand this book, you have to really sit down and examine the text. After having no previous understanding of this book, I can say it turned out to be somewhat enjoyable. I incredibly enjoyed parts of the story when Changez fell in love with Erica. It shows character development from when they went on a college trip, got to know each other, and almost worked toward a long-lasting relationship. In the first paragraph on page 105, the author writes, “Are you missing Chris?” She nodded, and I saw tears begin to force themselves between her lashes. “Then pretend”, I said. “Pretend I am him.” It’s parts like this where I enjoy the book. Changez wants to have a relationship with Erica but cannot achieve that due to Erica's connection to Chris even after he’s already deceased
I was surprised by the ending of the book, as it leaves us with many cliffhangers. I like wit hen authors do this because it gets you thinking about the possibilities of what could happen if the book continued. With the American reaching for something in his jacket, it leaves me with a high suspicion of what he could be reaching for. I would most definitely recommend this book to anyone who seeks to learn more about different cultures or ways of life because it gives you an understanding and different perspective of what others think about situations. This was my favorite book that I have read in English class this year so far. ...more "
