" vividly grotesque. I think some people will be blinded by the horror of it all to see more, calling it torture porn or so on. The racial implications of this kind of cannibalism is over looked in favor of focusing on the madness and horror that is killing and eating people. The main character is confusing, almost oscillating between complete acceptance and yet speaks often of the past in a way that makes his current reality seem utterly unbearable. idk this book is strange, I think it opens more doors to broader discussion that it actually says anything in of itself. which is fine, and for me a 4 star book, im going to think about it for a long while whether i want to or not. some people dont enjoy that, which also makes sense, in a david lynch kind of way. but it does also leaves me a little wanting

I think the beginning of the book it's so easy to have sympathy for Marcos as character, somebody that is experiencing the horror of this society, first-hand and dealing with interpersonal grief, it's kind of like the same kind of sympathy you'd have for anyone in that position. That it's hard to be professional and be grieving at the same time. But as you move through the book, I think you as the reader realize that Marcos is just as bad as everyone, he interacts with and that I think is in necessity of the society, everyone has to be a little mad to accept not only the concept of animals being erased entirely when companion pets have been a part of humanity for almost as long as people have had culture and to think that If that extends to not just companion animals, but also to every kind of animal in the world is such a level of brutality that is so grotesque, but also so human. to picture people having to kill their own pets. that even companion animals, which so many people Think of and look at like their own family, like people with personalities and to know that people would 100% prioritize their own lives over their pets, that they claim as family, it's a very human kind of horror but then also to accept that the world just now has cannibalism. Or at least the Western world. The the Eastern world maybe doesn't allow it as much. To think that the meat industry is such a big part of the world economy, those rich people that build those businesses that own those businesses, would not allow it to collapse. cannibalism, replacing that economy is believable. theres a suspension of disbelief in it for sure, we're going to say, this is real, right, like on the government level, we've accepted this, and it's, you know, public and mainstream, and not hidden at all. How do you make cannibalism, seem desirable, It makes sense to market it as special meat, something that is familiar, but now it's just more. its definitely a way to cloak what's really happening. But this book lacks any real commentary on racially, what it would mean for cannibalism to be real, this normalized, because the world is already racist, I find it hard to believe that there would be no racism involved in this industry. To assume that white people would be consumed on the same level that black people would be, I find it that hard to believe. That's kind of hinted with the hunter characters and like lead the leather industry, with cannibalism being like kind Of racially toned with, like an emphasis on different skin tones for different shades of leather and the game reserve, hunter guy having pictures of people hunting, African Americans like that makes sense to me. That feels real. That feels like something that would be. But then to have that commentary, and then not have any commentary when it comes to the actual eating of people and experimenting on people, I find it extremely hard to believe that marginalized people would not be targeted for that more than white people. Then also to have the portrayal of extreme misogyny and breeding women for the purpose of eating their children and even killing them while they're pregnant feels like such an affront to nature that I find it hard to believe that would be in the public at all, but it also makes sense in a way that women are exploited in every possible way already. That it would extend to cannibalism as well adds up. And to have this Central imagery of the main character, losing a child, and then impregnating this genetically altered, voiceless woman that is essentially cattle in this society and replacing his son with the child of this woman that has been deemed an animal. it's at once, acknowledging the humanity of these "animals", these domesticated humans, and at once, saying that, there are these people that we can make more human by being impregnated by someone that is not cattle, when otherwise that child would just be food. It reminds me of the racial hierarchy in new spain where someone with dark skin could have children with a white person, and their child would become white despite having mixed blood. overall I just wanted more from this book, and I feel like it didn't go as far as it could have when I think about other dystopian books that have more to them, like the Handmaids tale where it feels like every facet of that kind of society was thought about, where parts of this book just feel a little lacking in terms of commitment almost. ...more "
