“Her hands began to shake. “Stay with me. Please.”
He sighed. “Mac, this is my job. You’ve always accepted it before.”
“Yeah, when you were my best friend, not the man I lo—” She halted.
Will’s dark eyes glimmered. “Finish that sentence, baby.”
“Only if you promise not to go.”
“Finish the sentence.”

“His sexy mouth tightened in a thin line. “Fine. You want me to go, I’ll go.” He turned then shot her a glance over his shoulder. “But this isn’t over, Holly. Maybe I stepped over a line tonight, but I did it for you. You spend so much time worrying about your family that you never have enough time for yourself. I just wanted you to have one night that’s only about you, not them. Because I care about you, and I want…” He let out a slow breath. “I want to be with you, and I know you want to be with me.”
Her heart ached as a sad expression filled his face. “And, baby, we’d both be a lot better off if you’d just admit it.” With that, he slid out the door.”

“Oh well. She was foolish to think he could actually have been interested in her. She was too short, her boobs too small, her personality too sarcastic. Normally it didn’t bother her. Because along with all those other irritating toos, she was also too busy cleaning up her siblings’ messes and helping them with their even messier love lives to care about her own.”

“Come on, Will,” Holly said as she trailed after him into the kitchen. “You know this is a good plan.”
“You know it is,” Shelby chimed in, following them.
“Would you at least let me make a cup of coffee before we discuss this juvenile idiocy?” he grumbled.
Striding over to the counter, he clicked on the coffeemaker and then grabbed a mug from the cabinet over the sink. “You guys want any?” he offered.
Both women shook their heads, then waited patiently as he fixed himself a cup of black coffee, but he could see the unrestrained enthusiasm in their eyes. Leaning against the fridge, he gulped down the scalding liquid and waited for the java to do its thing. Almost instantly he felt alert, his mind sharpened by the caffeine. But while the sharp mind should’ve kick-started his usually superb common sense, he still found himself intrigued by the women’s outlandish plan.”

“The ring of her cell phone jerked her out of her thoughts. Arching her stiff back to stretch it, Jane got up and grabbed the cell from the bed. An unfamiliar number flashed across the screen. Wary, she picked up and said, “Hello?”
“Finally,” came a male voice. “I was beginning to think you were avoiding me, and that was very upsetting. My ego is very fragile.”
She recognized the mischievous rasp of Ryan Evans’ voice immediately. An unwitting smile reached her lips. “I’m not avoiding you. I’ve been working all day on my article and I tend to block out all outside noise when I’m writing. I take it you called before.”
“Three times,” he said with mock severity. “This is the most effort I’ve ever gone to for a woman.”
“I’m flattered.”
“You should be.” Ryan finally grew serious. “So, did you still want to do that interview?”
