It was becoming one of those 'always meant to read...' books. Then came the news of the movie, this really lit a fire under me and the biggest books i had tackled at this time was either Christine or the fourth Harry Potter book (which took over a year to read, 4 or 5 pages each bath time, not bad for this kid) I decided the best way to tackle this behemoth was the read along with the audiobook narrated by Steven Webber who did a fantastic job and really made that audiobook an experience.

The first chapter or so, that really long and unnecessary piece focusing on Stan Uris' wife was the big obstacle to get over and after that it was all rich story and characters i knew nothing of outside of the 1990 mini series which still has a special place in my heart to this day. For me it was more about those short stories which neither the mini series or the film adaptations touched on such as the fire at the Black Spot and the Kitchener Ironworks explosion which showed the true antagonist of this novel and Its Derry. King knew IT is not a malevolent, inter dimentional clown. IT is not a gang of hateful murderous bullies. IT is not a historical mythological statue with an Axe coming to life. IT is Derry. It starts and it ends with that town.

So if one day you find yourself driving through coastal Maine surrounded by those towering pines you might see the sign saying your next exit is Castle Rock which holds many of its own secrets but under Castle Rock is the town of Derry It might be a good few extra miles to travel but i can promise you, Castle Rock, Ludlow or even Jerusalem's Lot dont have a story for you that is anything like Derry.

It is almost a meme at this point that Stephen King can't do endings which i can agree with on the most part, but the ending to this book really effected me and i don't feel like it's talked about enough, it maybe people consider it one of his bad endings or people just totally missed the point of the ending but before reading the book my only experience with this piece was the 1990 mini series and in that series its highlighted a number of times that the losers barely remember the traumatic events of their childhoods. This always felt odd to me as a kid, sure you can forget what it feels like when you take a hard slam from your bike, Or the memory of a certain person or moment you completely blanked from your memory but being the potential victim of a Inter Dimensional entity would be pretty hard to forget. The ending of the book put it all into perspective. Once the evil has been defeated and they all go their separate ways Mike Hanlan begins to forget which means its the same case for the others, even Ben and Bev who leave together? maybe a nitpick but ill go with it. It is almost tragic and it made me feel kind of empty when i finally put those pieces together but at the same time it made me think 'wow what an ending' i could be missing some things as its been a number of years since reading so feel free to comment and point some things out I may be missing. But that is what has stuck for me and to this day it stands to be one of King's best endings. ...more "
