"I am really enjoying the book so far.(Some spoilers). I do like some of the themes Burney is using, such as the pursuit of knowledge; whether through Mr. Tyrold, the seemingly sporadic teachings of Sir Hugh, or the tutoring of Eugine; I really, really like that in a book. The only other thing is poor Eugine! Getting the pox, and from what I can tell a sort of facial deformity, then a dislocated shoulder. Poor girl!" Aug 08, 2026 12:56PM

“The grass grave in the village churchyard sinks down in a few years to the common level, and its place is no more to be found and so, to keep the remembrance of the departed a little longer in the world which they have left, we lay a stone over their graves, and inscribe upon it their name and age, and perhaps some few words of their virtues and of our own sorrow, and tho' the stone moulders and tho' the letters fade away, yet do they outlast the interest of what they record-we remember our dead always-but when we shall have joined them their memory may be said to have perished out of the earth, for no distinct idea of them remains behind, and the next generation soon forget they ever existed.”
Caroline Austen: A Memoir of Jane Austen and Other Family Recollections

“A, Beren, Beren! came a sound,
'almost too late have I thee found!
O Proud and fearless hand and heart,
not yet farewell, not yet we part!
Not thus do those of elven race
forsake the lover that they embrace.
A love is mine, as great a power
as thine, to shake the gate and tower
of death with challenge weak and frail
that yet endures, and will not fail”
J.R.R. Tolkien: Beren and Luthien
